Rebels Rebel

On Tuesday September 27th the Confederate Flag was banned at Schuylkill Valley High School.  The school board felt that the flag was not appropriate for school.
Joshua Schaeffer, a student at Schuylkill Valley says, "The flag should not be taken as racist, it is just part of my heritage."  The reason people take it as a racist symbol is because during the Civil War when, the Northern half of the country was at odds with the Southern end, the South flew the Confederate flag and the North flew what is now the American Flag. The South was for slavery, so when people wear or fly the Confederate flag today, people assume that they believe in slavery.  Chris Feliciano, a sophomore at RHS says, "I don't understand how it can be part of your heritage, it represented slavery and that's that."

The Schuylkill Valley School District says there have been inappropriate remarks regarding the rebel flag.  Dr Solamon Lausch states, "The Confederate Flag is, in some people's eyes, an objectable symbol."  The school board says since it has been banned there have been protestors, but no offenders.  The board is hoping that the issue will blow over and students will eventually  forget about it.

Eating Disorders and Teens
by: Virginia Lopez, Staff Writer

Teenagers that suffer from eating disorders usually have low self-esteem or depression. They also feel worthless and feel like they don't fit in with society. Two eating disorders are anorexia and bulimia.
Anorexia is when people stop themselves from eating and to maintain normal body weight. They feel fat when they really aren't. Some anorexics visualize buttocks, hips, thighs and breast as being fat. Anorexics are also in restrictive diets and have been known to exercise excessively. If the anorexia is untreated the results may be fatal.
Bulimia is when a person eats a large amount of food and then throws it up secretly. Bulimics are also obsessive about their body weight and shape. Bulimia can also be fatal.
Teenagers that suffer from an eating disorder usually blame it on society. An example is when they see their favorite celebrity on T.V.; they want to look like them. If they don't reach that point, they might stop eating and develop and eating disorder.
