The Iraqi Constitution
by:  Niki Lee, News Editor
As we all know our country is presently in a war with the Middle Eastern country of Iraq. Some feel the invasion was useless, and others are not sure what to feel.  Significant steps, as some may call it, have been taken in the United States effort to legitimize its invasion and occupation of Iraq.  The signing of the interim Iraqi constitution, by the Governing Council, represents one of these important steps.
President Bush portrays Iraqi's vote on a new constitution as a victory for opponents of terrorism, and a sign that the country is moving toward a democracy.  He also stated on Sunday, October 16, 2005, "We believe and the Iraqis believe that the best way forward is through the democratic process."  Does the majority of Iraqis really believe in instituting a democratic government?
Democracy implies a government by the people, for the people.  This form of government exemplifies the principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.  It can be said that this sense of social equality through a democratic government is contrary to the beliefs of an Arab country like Iraq; a country where Islam rules, and women's rights are not important.  Some Iraqis may not like the idea if equality for women.  It may be against their religion, and even their preferred way of life.  Although many Iraqis are in favor of the new government, many are not.
