Discrimination is showing bias or prejudice, making an opinion without knowing facts, towards others. Racism is being discriminatory or prejudice towards another due to race. Whether we want to believe it or not, all that still exist in the United States. "Racism may be less visible, but it's no less present," says Stephen Small, an African American studies professor at University of California. He said this is his speech to students in Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union's Heller Lounge on Friday, February 18, 2005. One issue is when one asks about another's race or ethnicity. Say my name is Trixie and I'm Caucasian. I find out that a new girl has moved to school. Judging by her skin color, she's not white. So I go ask someone who might know a little more about her, specifically what her ethnicity is. Why do we ask this question? Does it really matter, and if it does, why? The other issue to present is the issue of fighting. When fights happen at school, it's one race against another. What are these fights over? Most would say over boyfriend or girlfriends. Well, the trust is that usually they're based off of different beliefs they each have. It could even be over something as simple as style of clothing.
