A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOUTHWEST

    Southwest Middle School, formerly Southwest Junior High, was organized in September, 1925.  The school was divided among three locations: the academic section occupied two grade school buildings at Fourth and Elm; the practical arts department was quartered at the Boys’ High School, now City Hall; and the Armory at Rose and Walnut was used for assemblies, school parties, and gymnasium.

     After two years, Southwest moved to the Girls’ High School, Fourth and Court.  The practical arts shops occupied part of Washington and Rose grade school building, while the Armory continued to serve for Health Education.

   In March, 1937, Southwest moved to a new building at Third and Chestnut Streets where all activities are adequately housed under one roof.

SCHOOL SONG (Original)

Hail beloved Southwest Junior,

Southwest Junior High.

Thee we shall be always praising;

None with thee can vie.

Crimson red, emblem of courage,

White for purity;

Oh, to thee, our glorious colors,

Ever true we’ll be.

Southwest Junior, thee we honor,

Do our best for thee.

Grateful hearts and love we bring thee,

And truly loyalty.

Chorus-

Southwest Junior

Southwest Junior,

Southwest Junior High,

Thee we shall be always praising;

None with thee can vie.
