The District proudly serves the diverse communities of the City of Reading, the fifth largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Approximately 2,000 dedicated staff members serve the educational needs of more than 17,600 students. Enrollment levels are as follows: high school - 3,395; intermediate high school - 2,464; middle schools - 2,640; and elementary schools - 9,149.
Learning takes place in 19 different school buildings throughout the District, including 13 elementary schools (grades Pre-K–5), four middle schools (grades 6–7), one intermediate high school (grades 8–9), and one high school (10–12).

Message from Reading School District Superintendent
Student safety is our priority, and as a result of that initial story, we confiscated two knives today from middle school students who expressed concerns that they would also be robbed for their sneakers. The knives were recovered during a school search by district security, and a one-call message was sent to parents of that specific middle school to alert them.
We are now asking all district parents and community members to please remind students to not bring weapons into school. It is against school policy and the law.
Message from Reading School District Board of School Directors
On September 24,
2014, in a 8-0 vote, the School Board denied the Revised Charter School
Application submitted by the applicant for the Dr. Theodore Villafana School of
Scientific Discoveries Charter School.
The School Board’s denial was supported by a 47-page Adjudication, which
identified in detail all of the factual and legal reasons why the revised
application was deficient. Here is a summary
of some of the reasons for the denial:
- The applicant did not file a timely revised
application in order to open for the 2014-15 school year.
- The applicant did not meet its burden of
establishing sustainable community
support for the charter school plan, as that concept has been defined in the
- The actions and representations of the applicant
indicated that those behind the proposed school were not familiar with
requirements of the Public School Code and other applicable laws pertaining to
such basic things as: the length of a school year in Pennsylvania; the required
number of instructional days and hours; the separation of authority among a
charter school’s board of trustees, its administration and its management
company; who can legally and ethically serve on the board of trustees of a
public charter school; and how and under what circumstances public meetings of
a charter school can be held.
- The applicant failed to provide a curriculum and
instructional program that was reflective of the mission and vision of the
proposed school, or that fulfilled the requirements of Pennsylvania law.
- The applicant failed to provide required documents
pursuant to the Charter School Law, such as filed Articles of Incorporation
with the Department of State and a management contract between the charter
school and the proposed management company, Rend Enterprises.
- The applicant did not establish that it had
considered fundamental budgeting issues or that it would have the necessary
funds to operate.
