Inclement Weather Information

  • Snow Day Custodian

  • District services, such as appointments, enrollments, and meal distribution, could be impacted by inclement weather. Staff will do their best to contact families and reschedule any appointments.

Work & Learn From Home - Equipment

  • During inclement weather, staff and students might not be able to access the school buildings. During months when inclement weather is a possibility, students must take their Chromebook, laptop charger, and any materials home daily to ensure that they would be able to participate in remote learning, if necessary.

How We Share Information

  • As in previous years, any schedule adjustments due to inclement weather will be shared via the following communication tools:

    • Website Pop-Up Alert on

    • Blackboard Mass Notification - phone, text, email, and mobile app
Parent contact information listed with the school is used for mass notification messages and can be updated via the Reading School District’s mobile app or by visiting the school office.

      • Families can download the Reading School District’s free mobile app on Google Play or Apple iTunes.

      • Families are encouraged to create a free Gmail account through Google to get district-wide emails.

    • Reading School District Social Media
      Facebook at and Twitter at

    • WFMZ-Channel 69 News
We typically announce inclement weather information on WFMZ-Channel 69 News.

    • Class Dojo (K-8)
Building principals will post the information on the school’s Class Dojo. Families with students in K-8 are strongly encouraged to download the Class Dojo app for free on their phones.  Please reach out to your child's teacher or your school's Parent Outreach Assistant for information on how to join Class Dojo.

    • Remind (9-12)
High school teachers/administrators will post information on the school’s Remind. Families with students in 9-12 are strongly encouraged to download the Remind app for free on their phones.  Please reach out to your child's teacher or the school's Parent Outreach Assistant for information on how to join Remind.

*Please inform the main office at your child's school when your email, home/cell phone number or address changes so we have up-to-date contact information. This is extremely important in case of emergencies and weather notifications.

Scenarios for Bad Weather Days

  • We are prepared for five different scenarios depending on how severe the weather is.

Like a traditional snow day, the Reading School District will be closed.  There will be no school for students. Remote learning will not be offered and staff (except for essential personnel) will NOT work. Full snow days will have to be made up later in the school year using the snow make-up days built into the school calendar. In the event that more make-up days are needed than are built into the calendar, additional make-up days may be added to the end of the school year.

A full closure will likely be called on days when severe inclement weather causes loss of power and/or widespread damage or dangerous conditions.

This day will count as a school day, therefore, it will NOT need to be made up later in the year.

Teachers will work from home and post asynchronous work for students on their Google Classrooms.  Teachers will also be available for virtual office hours at scheduled times throughout the day via a Google Meet link or joining code (similar to Zoom) posted on their Google Classrooms.

Teachers will post their Google Meet links or joining codes (similar to Zoom) on their Google Classrooms for students to access live instruction.

Please note, students enrolled in the Reading Virtual Academy (RVA) in grades 9 -12 will not receive live instruction. They will log onto Edgenuity to complete their assignments as they normally do and follow the modified Reading High School schedule for tutoring assistance.

When inclement weather occurs overnight, there may be a need to begin school two-hours later than normal. This gives Reading School District facilities staff time to clear walkways and parking lots at each school. This delay also gives the City of Reading time to clear and salt roads and sidewalks with less vehicle and foot traffic.

In the event of a two-hour delay, school start times are as follows:

    • Reading High School:   9:30 a.m.

    • RKAA:  11:20 a.m.

    • RVA 9 - 12 grades will follow their normal schedule and teachers will be available for tutoring following the modified Reading High School schedule.

    • Middle Schools:  10:25 a.m.

    • Elementary Schools, including Kindergarten & K-8 RVA:  10:05 a.m.
