Dear Students, Parents, Guardians and Staff:

Dear Students, Parents, Guardians and Staff,

As schools across the country mourn and rally in support of the students, staff and families affected by the recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla., I want to update you on Reading School District’s continuous efforts to provide safe learning environments for our students and staff.

Reading School District follows the ALICE response system. ALICE is a set of proactive strategies that increase chances of survival during an active shooter event. ALICE is an acronym for:

A – Alert

L – Lockdown

I – Inform

C – Counter

E – Evacuate

In 2015, Reading School District established a district emergency response team, which has been trained by the ALICE Training Institute and has shared the knowledge and actions with staff across the school district. District leadership also distributed all-Hazard Plan Manuals, which outline potential threats and responses. These manuals are located in all Reading School District buildings and classrooms. Both the manual and the ALICE strategies are annually reviewed with staff members in August, prior to the start of the school year. Principals plan to review the protocols again with all staff on Monday.

Reading School District has active surveillance procedures at each building, and we employ Safe Schools Officers and a Safe Schools Director, who is a former Berks County police officer. Our Safe Schools Director monitors school safety and maintains daily contact with local law enforcement.

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority. Students, staff, parents and community members are encouraged to share information about incidents or issues regarding the safety of our students. If it is an emergency, please call 9-1-1 immediately. Otherwise, to share information or anonymous tips:
