RHS social worker and homeless liaison Leanne Eckenrode wins state award for her work with the homeless students

Two years ago a student came to Leanne Eckenrode and told her he just brushed his teeth with hand soap.

Eckenrode, Reading High School's social worker and homeless liaison, gave the student some toothpaste and started to collect other supplies in her classroom closet.

That's how the Knight's Closet was born and now there is one in each school building.

In September, Eckenrode was honored for her efforts by the Pennsylvania Department of Education when she was presented with the Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Region 2 Advocate of the Year.
