RHS Theatre Program Flourishes with Pippin

The Reading High School Theatre program created a magical production of “Pippin” for this year’s spring musical. “Pippin,” tells the story of a young man who learns the meaning of glory, love, and war on an adventure to happiness and fulfillment. Through magic, song, and dance the audience gets transported into a show of 1970s glitz and glam. cast of pippin

After last year’s performance of “In the Heights,” director Joseph Smith knew that picking a show to top it would be a fun challenge. “I always choose shows that are necessary theatre,” said Mr. Smith. “I want the audience to leave the theatre but not leave the show. We want to give a performance that sticks with people.”

The “Pippin” cast had approximately 40 students. “Any student who wants to be involved can be, we don’t cut anyone. We will find a spot for anyone who wants to participate.” Mr. Smith stated, “This show is a very dance-heavy musical. This year we had more flexibility with other clubs and sports. More dance team members and cheerleaders are participating this year because of that flexibility.”

“It is always impossible until it is done,” Mr. Smith said. He prides himself on the growth of his students throughout the show process. “It’s amazing to see the students open up and grow. We start from nothing and then see them open up and put on this great production.” The cast rehearsed only three times a week.

Congratulations to all of the students and staff who made “Pippin” an overwhelming success! We are proud of your hard work and dedication. The show was extraordinary!
