Reading High School Freshman Takes Girls Wrestling by Storm
Esmerelda Tellez, a freshman at Reading High School has been a force to be reckoned with this wrestling season. The 2023 girls’ wrestling season is already historic, as this is the first year the sport is officially sanctioned by the PIAA. However, as soon as Esmerelda, Melli as she is called by her friends, stepped foot on the mat, she began making history for the District.
Esmerelda did not realize the success she would have with wrestling. “I joined because I wanted to stay in shape for softball,” she said. “I saw the flyers around school and thought it would be fun.”
She is not only a great wrestler, but she also loves to play softball and be active. “I didn’t expect to be this good at it. I have always been strong and athletic but I never expected to be as successful as I have been.”
Esmerelda went on to compete in the 2023 Pennsylvania girls' state wrestling championship; an historic moment for the Reading School District. She finished 2-2 at the tournament.
The Reading High School’s Girls’ Wrestling team consists of five girls; one freshman, three sophomores, and a junior. They are all young and excited about what lies ahead for the sport. The team learns about strength and discipline. Not only do the girls practice against each other, but they also practice with and against the boys' team.
“I’ve learned a lot,” Esmerelda said. “I’ve gained not only muscle but I’ve learned more about how my body works and to be more disciplined.”
Outside of being a great athlete, Esmerelda’s hobbies include reading, drawing, and sleeping. Her favorite subject in school is science. Esmerelda’s advice to girls who are thinking about wrestling is: “Don’t be afraid to try, there will be ups and downs but don’t give up.”
