Department Overview

The Benefits and Risk Management Department of The Reading School District is one department; however, it serves two distinct roles.

Employee Benefits are administered through this office, whose task is to ensure that employees are aware of the benefits offered to them, what those benefits cover and the procedures to enroll / disenroll in benefits. This department will help you navigate through the often-complicated world of benefits. From new hire orientation sessions through annual open enrollment, to managing retiree benefits, it is safe to say that during your employment, you will have a need, at some point, to call upon this office.

The Benefits and Risk Management Department is also responsible for Workers’ Compensation. You will begin by reporting your accident to this office and they will be your point of contact for questions regarding your case. They will work with you and your building administration to ensure that you are treated and returned to work when you are safely able to do so.

Safety is a priority at RSD and through risk management, we contribute to protecting RSD from potential losses. Through our Safety Committee, we identify, assess, and respond to risks within RSD. In conjunction with building administration and our Facilities Department, we conduct building inspections and participate in open communication with staff to address safety concerns.

Employee wellness, both physically and mentally, is paramount to our success as the Reading School District and as individuals. This department also oversees the RSD Wellness Program. We offer activities throughout the year for your mind/body. Weekly yoga classes, healthy snacks and our employee assistance program are just a few of the wellness items managed through this department.

Employee Health

Open enrollment for benefits takes place in the spring for a July 1st effective date.

Outside of qualified life events (QLE,)  this is the only time you can enroll/change benefits. If you do plan on changing or enrolling in benefits you must do so within 31 days of the event.

 Voluntary Benefits:
Enrollment in voluntary benefits follows the same rules as enrollment in medical benefits.  We are currently offering the following voluntary benefits:

  • Supplemental life insurance for employee, spouse and children

  • Long and short-term disability

  • Critical illness

  • Hospital indemnity

  • Accident

If you are resigning from RSD your benefits will terminate on the date of your resignation. If you are retiring into PSERS your benefits will terminate on the last day of the month of which you retire.

All open enrollment information is sent to your home approximately two weeks prior to open enrollment.  Please remember, RSD has a spousal rule which states that if your spouse is employed and is offerered benefits through their employer, they are required to elect those benefits as their primary coverage.  Your spouse is not required to coverage children, however, they must elect benefits for themselves.  Periodic audits are done through the benefits office to ensure compliance.
