We are excited to share new opportunities that will help all 9th grade students explore their interests, discover future career pathways, and build the skills needed for success in high school and beyond.
Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, all incoming 9th grade students will participate in a Freshman Seminar course during the daily Armor Block period at Reading High School. Students will earn one-half elective credit (0.5) for completing the course.
The Freshman Seminar course is designed to support students in their transition to high school, while helping them develop organization, communication, wellness, self-advocacy, and career and college readiness skills. As part of Freshman Seminar, students will also participate in pathway exploration experiences connected to the Reading High School Innovation Academy (RHSIA) and the Reading Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center (RMCTC).
Throughout the school year, all 9th grade students will visit RHSIA in small groups to participate in hands-on experiences led by Academy staff in each of the RHSIA pathways: Engineering & Design, Computer Science & Information Technology, Health & BioMedical Science, and STEM in the Human Services. In addition, all 9th grade students will visit RMCTC prior to the open enrollment period to learn more about the 30 career and technical programs offered.
These experiences are designed to help students explore their interests, learn about future opportunities, and make informed decisions about pathway options as they prepare for 10th grade and beyond. Additional information about schedules, transportation, and pathway experiences will be shared with families as the school year approaches.
